RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Since this Catholic School, Sacred Heart School, has as its goal to create and maintain a Christian Catholic Educational Community, we encourage the students to participate actively in our School Community Mass, which is the central and unifying bond of our faith community, at our All School Friday and special feast days, as well as our Tuesday and Thursday Eucharistic Celebrations.

In order to made the Mass/Liturgy more meaningful and personal, each class, grades 1-8, has the privilege to prepare the liturgy for the school Mass on a rotating basis.  Parents and friends are encouraged to attend the school community Masses whenever possible.  On special occasions, paraliturgies are celebrated with the entire student body as well as in individual classes.

Children in grade K do not participate actively until they receive preparation and participate in the various parts of the Mass.

In this way, we hope the students will be more adequately prepared for Sundays, when they share the Eucharistic Celebration with their immediate families.

As the primary Christian Educators parents are expected to provide their children with the example required for Christian growth by instilling in their children an appreciation for spiritual values and assisting at Mass with them as a family on Sundays/Saturday evenings and Holy Days.

Therefore, all school families must assist as a family at a minimum of three mandatory family Masses/Liturgies at Sacred Heart Church as calendared during the school year

Students should learn while young to contribute to the support of their respective parishes; therefore, parents, on Sundays and holy days, please use your offertory envelope and have your child/children do so also.

Altar Severs

Altar servers are enlisted from grades four (4) through eight (8).  Punctuality is expected.

Reverence for all that is holy is to be demonstrated in action.

SOME SPECIFICS OF PROGRAMS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

  1. Religious Education Courses aim to impart knowledge and Christian attitudes, prayer, frequent reception of sacraments, charity, respect for oneself and others, kindness, generosity, and obedience.

  2. The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Penance/First Confession) is made for the first time by second grade students, usually on a Tuesday in April, approximately one month before First Holy Communion.  Parents are required to attend a meeting that informs them of the details of the reception of the sacrament.

  3. The Sacrament of Holy Eucharist (receiving of First Communion) is made with the traditional group in the second grade.  The Director of the Religious Education Program and the second grade teacher are the persons in charge of the sacramental programs of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist.  The children are prepared for these two sacraments with parental and teacher guidance.  It is essential and required that the parent/s and/or guardian/s attend a meeting that informs them of the details of the reception of the sacraments.

  4. The Sacrament of Confirmation or a commitment to Jesus is made by the seventh and eighth graders.  (Every other year: year 2000; 2002...)  The requirements for the reception of this sacrament are as follows:
    bullet

A formal request to enter the sacramental program for Confirmation

    bullet

    A desire to be confirmed

    bullet

Knowledge of basic Catholic beliefs of the Church as demonstrated by an oral and written test

    bullet

Attendance at the Day of renewal in the Spirit.

    bullet

Further details of the reception of this sacrament are given by the Director of the Religious Education Program and are announced in the monthly calendar.

  5. The Way of the Cross (Stations) is a Lenten Devotion for the entire school on Fridays during Lent.  The seventh and eighth graders enact the Living Stations on the Wednesday of Holy Week.  (The Way of the Cross is a Franciscan practice.)

  6. The Rosary is an important sacramental.  The Rosary is used as prayer especially in the months of October and May.

  7. The Blessed Virgin Mary is the Patroness of the United States and Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Patroness of the Americas.  We honor Mary as the Mother of God and ask her to intercede for us to her Son, Jesus.  We honor Mary in a special way in May with a paraliturgical celebration, May Crowning and the Rosary.
